But now 20 years on, 90 percent of families in Venezuela say they do not have enough to eat - and the United Nations predicts that over five million people will have fled the country by the end of 2019. Chávez was at the helm of the country with the largest proven oil reserves in the world, and set about spending Venezuela’s vast oil wealth. Around the world he was hailed as a new hope for Socialism by some politicians. A precursor to many of today’s populist leaders, Chávez bypassed traditional media and spoke directly to the people through his weekly live TV show. Told by many of those who knew him, this is the story of incredible short-term achievements in health and education, but also of the tragic legacy of his idealism, populism and ruthless pursuit of absolute power. With populist movements increasingly taking power in countries around the world, it’s a story that's now more relevant than ever. Part of BBC Two’s award-wining This World strand.

Zoeeesky 说：「there is no shortcut」「don't surrender to shiny things. better to look at boring politicians who have long term stable plans that actually move things forward」人是最不可靠的，但大眾又很容易陷入Cult of personality。一個好的出發點，但不具備相應能力又不肯讓專家幹事，把懂幹事的人替換掉削弱主要經濟來源石油價格一跌毫無應急能力，搞公社和國有everything怕是歷史沒學好結果當然是顯而易見的貨物短缺，錢不夠但為了穩定支持者又不能不花只能不斷印錢最後導致通脹，犯罪率上升但不打壓因為那是右派作法我是真的看不懂。人間地獄。看完後去搜了下最近的新聞也是兩眼一黑。大學時最喜歡的教授之一就是委內瑞拉人，能懂他當時談起祖國的是鬱結
Ubik 说：典型的理想主义底层乡民掌权后毁掉一个国家的故事。无脑通过国有化把富人的钱转到穷人手里的结果就是最大的产油国到今天却成了世界最危险、穷的国家之一。一手好牌被脑蝉乡民打得稀烂。刚好前天才看过另一部07年拍的涉及委内瑞拉的左翼纪录片，不知现在那位脑蝉左翼导演看到委内瑞拉如今的状况会怎么想。 但是话又说回来，片里用这样一个低级直接的采访片段来抹黑攻击查韦斯的人格：女记者说她问了个问题查韦斯就变得很没风度很野蛮了，那你倒是把你问了什么问题给说清楚啊。再一看，原来是BBC的纪录片。
W.史密斯 说：一个啥也不懂的总统，加上一些外部干预，国际油价的大幅下降，委内瑞拉一下子就变成困苦之地了。 教训是深刻的，革命不是请客吃饭，创业容易守业难。 南美人的热情和冲动使得他们非常容易受到煽动，所谓的民主政治如不开民智的情况下，会成为一个灾难。查韦斯一个军人，不懂经济学，不懂治国方针，仅凭个人的理想，愣是把一个有钱的国家变成了混乱之地。 一个人的独裁统治绝对不是正确的道路。真正持续性的政治体系还是需要有一个稳健的精英集团，运用科学发展的观点，实事求是的完成一个个目标。
